BRIGHT SPOTS FRIDAY: “It’s CrossFit. Nobody cares.”

BRIGHT SPOTS FRIDAY!

Our annual in-house competition will feature a record turnout! I’m blown away that we will have 72 Nevermorons throwing down on Sunday. What I’m most stoked about is the amount of new faces that are slated to compete! On that note, if there is ANY reluctance or anxiety coming into the weekend, keep in mind two things: 1) This is a SOCIAL event first, so have FUN; 2) Heed the words of wisdom from our Head Coach Stephen D. Berkstresser

“It’s CrossFit. Nobody cares.”

There’s actually a psychological phenomenon known as the “Spotlight Effect”…people tend to believe they are being noticed more than they really are.

Whenever an athlete from our tribe registers for a local competition, the inevitable butterflies kick in as game day nears. I always make a point to ease the tension by reminding them, “Nobody is really watching you. Everyone else is concerned that everyone is watching THEM.” At 3,2,1,Go! it’s just another workout. So have FUN!

One of my Stoic challenges this week was to wear my worst clothes out…to “be content to be thought foolish and stupid.” (Lucky for me, most of my clothes ARE my worst clothes). The author suggested, “What keeps us from chasing our dreams, from trying new things, from stepping out of our comfort zone? Fear of what other people might think or say. The thought of doing something that might draw attention or that might draw criticism, often keeps us from ever trying.”

Don’t let other people’s opinions dictate your life. Don’t limit yourself by what other people might think. At the end of the day, people think more people notice the stain on their shirt than actually do. See you all Sunday morning!

“It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own.” — Marcus Aurelius
